O Oriens, Op.30
For SSAA choir
About this work
The 5th-century antiphon O Oriens invokes the morning light to dispel darkness and guide humanity to peace. Despite its Christian origins, its universal message is capable of transcending all faiths.
The music, marked by the synesthetic use of tonal color, begins with a mysterious and cold theme alternating with warmer moments. The dark and intense central section culminates in a poignant climax with the words et in umbra mortis (“and in the shadow of death”). The work concludes with a serene resolution that reflects the triumph of light over darkness.
