RONDÒ ALLA BARBARA, Op.26
For piano trio
About this work
Structured as a neoclassical rondo, this piece unfolds through a recurring refrain, two sharply contrasting episodes, a fugato and a coda.
The refrain, irreverent and sharply etched, carries the air of a mocking jest, with exaggerated articulation and touches of black humor. In contrast, the first episode offers warmth and quiet optimism, its lyrical writing evoking the inward radiance of Schubert’s trios. The second episode shifts tone entirely again: playful and almost childlike, it flirts with simplicity without ever surrendering to it. The fugato resumes the sardonic spirit of the refrain, adopting a pedantic voice that satirizes the rigid academicism still haunting certain artistic circles. The coda begins as an interruption, as if the players had briefly lost their way, before gathering speed and driving toward a final burst of unrestrained energy.
Written in a hurry for the Música d’Ara concert series of the Association of Catalan Composers, the work was premiered on November 28, 2024, at the SGAE Mompou Auditorium in Barcelona, with Lev Mikhailovskii (violin), Jean-Baptiste Texier (cello), and Kíev Portella (piano).
