THE WITCHES' CHANT, Op.21

For mixed choir and piano
About this work

A darkly playful setting of the witches’ potion scene from Macbeth, this piece combines biting dissonance with bursts of black humour. The main theme is driven by a restless tarantella rhythm, evoking the manic energy of the witches as they stir their bubbling brew. The central section shifts into more unsettling territory, building an eerie atmosphere that borders on the genuinely frightening. Though the music embraces chaos and mischief, it never strays far from the grotesque undercurrent that runs through Shakespeare’s scene.
