About this work

This piece is about one’s journey towards finding meaning. Towards finding the hidden worlds behind simple words. Towards understading what our place in this world is and what human nature is about. There’s a sense of hope and wonder in the music throughout, which, in the author’s case, parallel his journey overcoming an illness in late 2023.

This composition is also a musical exercise in thight motivic writing, where almost all the themes are built on the same 3-note melodic cell presented at the start. The central climax divides the piece into two halves at roughly the golden section of 1.618 : 1.

A Morning was composed for the 2024 edition of the Premiere Project Festival organized by Dr. Brandon Elliott. It was premiered on June 28th 2024 at the Zhang Orchestral Hall in Irvine (California), with the Choral Arts Initiative Choir conducted by Ali Sandweiss Hodges.
