SCHERZO VOLANTE, Op.22
For violin and piano
About this work
This brief, toccata-like miniature for violin and piano unfolds as a tightly coiled burst of kinetic energy. Cast in a compressed sonata form, it opens with a restless theme full of hemiolas. A more subdued and mysterious second idea follows, but stability remains elusive: the exposition ends in a whirlwind of activity, giving way to a compact development and a condensed recapitulation. The piece culminates in an exuberant coda.
Throughout, violin and piano chase one another in spirited dialogue, marked by piquant harmonies and sudden shifts. Echoes of Classical balance and proportion remain visible beneath the surface, though refracted through a more ironic, uninhibited lens. At its core, the piece evokes a sense of pursuit or flight, capturing the joyful agitation of motion for motion’s sake.
