SONATINA No.2, Op.18

For piano
About this work

Composed in the summer of 2022, this neoclassical sonatina pays tribute to the melodic invention and lightness of Mozart and Schubert, while introducing a more modern harmonic vocabulary.

The first movement follows sonata form and begins with two contrasting themes based on the same melodic cell. The first is sweet and lyrical, the second more pointed and playful. These themes are developed and lead to a dramatic climax, followed by a recapitulation that begins unexpectedly in the wrong key.

The second movement, in ternary form, opens with a quiet, ambiguous theme. A contrasting middle section introduces new material with a slightly jazzy character and gradually builds to a peak before the return of the opening idea.

The final movement is a fast-paced rondo with two contrasting episodes. The main theme resembles a tarantella in energy and rhythm. The first episode is syncopated and slightly naïve in tone, while the second, in quintuple time, is more direct and driving. The sonatina ends with a brief but energetic coda.

Approximate duration: 10 minutes and 40 seconds.
