SONATINA No.1, Op.17
For piano
About this work
Written in a brief burst of winter focus between late November and early December 2021, this neoclassical sonatina pays quiet tribute to a lineage of compact, finely chiselled works from the twentieth century. While Ravel’s Sonatine could be seen as the most immediate point of reference, the piece also gestures toward lesser-known sonatinas by Soviet and French composers whose clarity, restraint, and formal elegance left a lasting impression on me.
Lasting around ten minutes, the sonatina aims for balance and direct lyricism. It is classical more in spirit than in direct quotation, using familiar forms as a framework for new musical ideas.
